The Wild Flower Sextet

Saxophonist Matt Anderson has formed a new sextet featuring some great talent from the North, The Wild Flower Sextet. He explains that it

...celebrates one of the greatest musicians and composers of all time, Wayne Shorter, famous for his contribution across the whole spectrum of jazz, from Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, through the Miles Davis Second Great Quintet and Weather Report to his new Quartet. The dynamic new sextet aims to capture some of the essence of Shorter’s approach and sound in a celebration of his music as well as with new material.

As well as Anderson, the band features Mark Chandler, Alex Munk, Jami Sheriff, Sam Vicary and Dave Walsh.

Matt has sent us some videos from a recent recording session to check out -

Troyka & Tom Gibbs ft. Will Vinson at Sela

Troyka - Monday 19th November
Tom Gibbs Quartet ft. Will Vinson - Monday 26th November

November sees two heavyweight UK pianists bring their groups to Sela Bar in Leeds.

Tom Gibbs Quartet

Pianist Tom Gibbs' Fear of Flying brings together a heavyweight band with saxophonist Will Vinson flying in from NYC ('spectacular, adroit and sophisticated' The Guardian), Glasgow bassist Euan Burton ('an unbelievable creative force in Scottish Music' BBC Scotland) and Londoner James Maddren (drummer with Gwilym Simcock, Norma Winstone, Kit Downes). They are here to launch the pianist's debut release on Whirlwind Recordings. The group plays Gibbs' highly melodic, uniquely styled compositions that helped lead the pianist's hero John Taylor to call him 'Inspiring'.

Troyka

Troyka are Chris Montague (guitars and loops), Joshua Blackmore (drums) and Kit Downes (organ), three young musicians based in London whose intense live shows have seen them hotly tipped to follow in the foot steps of Polar Bear and Portico Quartet and become the next young band to explode from the capital’s fertile jazz scene.

Tickets for both gigs are £10/8 each, but Sela is offering a deal for LCoM students - £15 to see both gigs.
Tickets available from Sela, Jumbo, Crash and soon on wegottickets.com. Or, email matt@matt-anderson.org.uk to be put on the reserve list.

BBC 'Jazz on 3' Music from the Leeds Improvising Scene

(Programme available until Monday 15th October)

Jez Nelson presents music from the Leeds improvising scene including a set from Shatner's Bassoon, a sextet led by recent Leeds College of Music graduates, keyboardist Johnny Richards and bass player Mick Bardon.

"Recorded in front of an enthusiastic home-town audience at the city centre's Fusebox night, their music veers from math-rock to sounds of the circus, with irreverent humour never far away".

The programme also includes a visit to The Shed in Brawby, north Yorkshire's hub of improvised happenings now celebrating its twentieth season. Trombonist Gail Brand explores how the venue has maintained both a strong audience and a challenging agenda - past exploits have included Lol Coxhill playing in a skip and Mrs Boyes' Bingo (a duet for bingo caller and percussion) - and takes part in a specially-created event, Shed Builder, improvising in a workshop with a welder.

JD73's 'Electrio' live at Jazz:Refreshed

"If you love Rhodes piano driven space-funk in the vein of Herbie Hancock, Bob James and Patrice Rushen, then look no further"

JD73 (JazzDoctor73) is the alter ego of Leeds based musician/producer Dan Goldman. His new project 'Electrio' is a stripped down trio taking inspiration from Herbie Hancock's 1973 landmark album 'Head Hunters'. The trio features Dan (JD73/Morcheeba/Nightmares On Wax/The Haggis Horns) on Rhodes and synths, Kenny Higgins (Corinne Bailey Rae Band) on bass and Gordon Kilroy (Eddie Roberts' Roughneck) on drums

Dan says "It's jazz but it's in a modern context. I really want to get my trio out there and put it on the map. Nobody is doing this kinda thing really".  The band is hoping to get out and play in the North. Any interested promoters / venues can reach Dan via his website http://www.jd73.co.uk.

Mick Beck "Rather Different" Movie Trailer

"Mick Beck is one of the world's best virtuoso tenor sax and bassoon players" say Freenoise.co.uk. He began free improvising in the hotbed of 1980's London jazz scene, citing Sonny Rollins and Eric Dolphy as his main influences in the genre. Moving to Sheffield in the 1990's he met and played with Derek Bailey and through to 2004, along with Martin Archer, John Jasnoch and Charlie Collins, he was one of the lead organisers of Sheffield's Other Music, a bastion of the UK 's free music scene for 22 years.

"The film is a fast paced and fun yet deeply revealing foray into a most misunderstood form of creative expression, known as free music"
