FAQ No. 4
Can I smoke? Can I dance? Do I get my money back if it doesn’t sound like Glenn Miller? Will the band talk exclusively to me for an hour after the gig? Can I complain about the quality of the gig promotion? Can anyone tell me why supermarket bacon goes all watery when you fry it…?

No, to all these questions - but you definitely sound like the sort of person that comes to jazz gigs, so don’t miss ANY of them!
Ranjana Ghatak (vocals), Seb Rochford (drums) & Kit Downes (piano)
Tickets £14.00/£12.00
(£30 season ticket available on 01422 255266*)
A phenomenal trio. Drummer Seb Rochford & pianist Kit Downes are simply two of the most prominent figures in the UK jazz world. Their acclaimed individual instrumental styles are equally matched by an abundant musicality - something that is testified to by their compositional skills and substantial success as band leaders (debuting respectively with 'Polar Bear' and 'Empirical'). Although born in London, Ranjana Ghatak spent several years training in North Indian singing styles and her crisp phrasing and rich vocal tones brought her immediate attention when she debuted as support for Zoe Rahman – "This is one vocalist to watch out for...!” ('Confluence').
"Rochford is a saboteur of the ungroove, parrying Downes's atrial collapse at the keys with a deceptive and delicate origami rhythm... once tasted their music becomes essential and difficult to rest without." (Morningstaronline)
* Season ticket includes gigs on 24th October, 8th November and 1st December
Thurs 8th November @ 8.00pm
Kate Williams Quartet with Bobby Wellins
Tickets £14.00/£12.00
(£30 season ticket available on 01422 255266)
Pianist Kate Williams and legendary sax player Bobby Wellins recorded a duo CD ('Smoke and Mirrors') at Dean Clough earlier this year which has received consistent 'play time' on JazzFM and four-star reviews in The Observer. This gig marks part of the CD's formal launch - although the gig itself is an altogether riper affair, featuring Williams' full quartet in a format that sees Wellins playing with leading jazz flautist Gareth Lockrane (last seen here several years ago with his band 'Grooveyard', whose overdue second CD is also launched this year). A rare delight.
"An outstandingly calm and calming recording; never threatening a sonic explosion—it doesn't need to—it just glows, giving out a warmth and a charm all its own". (Jazz on Line)

'The Legend of Mike Smith': Soweto Kinch (alto sax); Karl Rashid-Abel (bass) & Shaney Forbes (drums)
Tickets £14.00/£12.00
(£30 season ticket available on 01422 255266)
Multi award-winning jazz alto saxophonist and hip-hop star Soweto Kinch celebrates the Autumn release of his CD, ‘The Legend of Mike Smith’, with a UK tour of his new trio featuring Karl Rashid-Abel (double bass) and Shaney Forbes (drums). A contemporary take on The Seven Deadly Sins, it's a stunning show by all accounts - but will Kinch's outstanding musicianship outweigh the non-metropolitan bias against his hip-hop interludes? Well. Jazz shouldn't be about compromises. The show's catchline is 'expect the unexpected!' and we'll take our chances...
"A real tour de force". (John Fordham – The Guardian)
