Jazz At The Mill Announces Autumn Programme

Jazz audiences in and around Bradford take note - Jazz at the Mill at Black Dyke Mills returns for another season of weekly jazz starting September 11th.

Run by the great team team of Kathy and John Dyson, Jazz at the Mill will host jazz every Monday (please note the change of day; it's on a MONDAY now) featuring some of the finest musicians the North has to offer.

Entry costs just £5 and tea, coffee, homemade soup and cake are available. If you fancy something a little stronger, it's BYOB. All events run from 7.30 until 10pm.

New Jazz in Queensbury - Jazz At The Mill

One of Northern Jazz's greatest teams, Kathy and John Dyson, have set up a new jazz night in Black Dyke Mills in Bradford. The session will run weekly and they have now announced the programme until July 4th. Each gig runs on a Tuesday from 7.30 until 10pm and admission is £5.

It's always good to hear of a new jazz venue in the North and we wish the Dysons lots of success in their new venture!

Jazz North team up with Kala Sangam in Bradford, October 22nd

If you're in or around Bradford tomorrow, why not head to Kala Sangam Arts Centre to see a special concert supported by Jazz North, Kala Sangam and the International Foundation of Carnatic Music.

Sur Sangam is a project run by South Asian Arts Centre Kala Sangam and tomorrow evening it will feature the world renowned N Ravikiran, R N Prakash and R N Prathap and Jazz violinist Olivia Moore.

Since his grand entrance at the age of two, Ravikiran has won world wide critical acclaim. He has been one of the most inspiring ambassadors of Indian music and culture. The substance and quality of his contributions as instrumentalist, composer, vocalist, guru, author and orator are held in the highest regard.  

Ravikiran is the inventor of the Award-Winning world music concept ‘Melharmony’ and he is a history making achiever of epic proportions with feats like setting to music 1330 verses of ancient Tirukkural in only 16 hours.

The International Foundation for Carnatic Music (IFCM) is a non-profit organisation whose main motto is ‘Service to Music; Service through Music.’ The IFCM not only endeavours to foster one of the world’s greatest melodic art forms – Carnatic music, but also strives to promote mutual appreciation, goodwill and peace between people of diverse countries and cultures.

Tickets for the event cost £7.50/£5 concessions and a family ticket is available for £20. Tickets can be purchased through the Kala Sangam website.

Gig Preview: Imani Hekima in Bradford, March 4th

Solo pianist Imani Hekima will perform at the Delius Arts Centre in Bradford on March 4th presenting a diverse programme of music from jazz to Bollywood.

The lunchtime concert will take place from 12.45pm until 1.30pm and costs £3/2. It's a BYOF event and is open to families (children go for free!)

I’ve been following Imani’s work for a while and his piano playing and knowledge of Bollywood classics is astounding...(Ashanti OMkar- BBC Asian Network)

Kala Sangam's Journeys of Jazz, February 27th

Kala Sangam is hosting an evening of music to celebrate UNESCO's International Year of Global Understanding in Bradford on February 27th.

Vijay Venkat, the Musician in residence at Kala Sangam - a multi-instrumentalist and multi-genre performer and composer will play the violin and the bamboo flute with a group of expert musicians - Jack Warlop, a professional musician trained in New York and well versed with jazz and other musical genres will be playing the piano/keyboards, Hugh Bradley a bassist and a very popular musician on the festival concert circuit will play the bass, Claudio Kron a multi-percussionist and singer will bring the rhythmic beauty of music through his percussive brilliance whilst the well known percussion experts and brothers Bangalore R. N. Prakash and Pratap will be adding colours to the percussion part through the south Indian Classical two faced drum Mridangam, Ghatam (the mud pot), Kanjira (single framed hand-held drum) and vocalised rhythms. 

Away from the usual Jazz standards, these musicians coming together on this special occasion of celebrating the multi-cultural and multi-genric meeting of creative minds, will endeavour to understand each other's specialities in a global perspective to create New Music. They will endeavour to journey through various musical genres which is the hall mark of improvised music. This seamless multi-genric excursions into creativity - a hall mark of all embracing Jazz, is what will be explored considering the diversity of musicians that are involved.

 

The event takes place at the Kala Sangam Arts Centre based in St Peter's House, Bradford, BD1 4TY. Tickets cost £7.50/5.00 concessions and a family ticket is available for £20.

Jazz Radio in Bradford - artists submit your work!

As well as running live jazz at JATP in Bradford, for the past few years promoter Martin Powell has also been presenting a jazz radio show called Jazzscene on BCB Radio 106.6fm.

The show features a range of jazz with a particular focus on UK and Continental groups. He is a big supporter of current musicians on the scene and his recent broadcasts have included music by John Bailey, Zeitgeist, Girls In Airports, The Weave, Outhouse and Michael Garrick.

Jazz in Bradford - Autumn/Winter Programme

JATPJazz in Bradford have announced their Autumn/Winter programme which kicks off on 22nd August with the John Fleming Quintet.

At the beginning of 2014, JATPJazz moved to a new venue after a number of years at the Irish Club. Their new home, Glyde House, has proved successful and their newest gig season includes the addition of extra gigs run by the Glyde itself.  This is described as a venture which aims to increase the frequency of jazz in Bradford.

Bradford Scratch Orchestra

A workshop series/large ensemble project has been set up in Bradford by bassist and composer Seth Bennett focused on experimental, improvised and collectively devised music. Bradford Scratch Orchestra will meet each Thursday, working toward a debut performance with Martin Archer's Juxtavoices as part of the 2014 RECON festival.

City Vaults Bradford stops Sunday Jazz

Promoter and musician Keith Jevons has announced that the weekly Sunday jazz session at City Vaults in Bradford has come to an end after 6 years.

I'm really sorry folks but the Sunday night Jazz at City Vaults has come to an end.
We've had some good times over the six years we've been there.
