Gig Preview: The Matt Robinson Quintet and the Dave Hamblett Sextet at Wakefield Jazz

On Friday the 29th November, Wakefield Jazz will be hosting a night of music made a group of precociously talented young musicians in the form of two overlapping bands; The Matt Robinson Quintet and the Dave Hamblett Sextet. Both fantastic performers and composers, this is not a night to be missed.

Wakefield’s own Matt Robinson is a recent graduate of the Royal Academy, where he won their top award of Yamaha Jazz Scholar. Matt has recently been featured on releases by vocalist Emma Smith, trumpeter Reuben Fowler and drummer Ollie Howell, as well as writing melodic, engaging compositions for his own group. His playing is measured and sensitive, showing a maturity well beyond his years and a firm understanding of both the jazz tradition and modern facets of the genre.

Such is the talent on offer at this gig, that Dave Hamblett also won a Yamaha Jazz Scholar award on graduating the Royal Academy and since then he has worked with a host of jazz names including George Garzone, Kenny Wheeler and Phronesis. Phronesis pianist Ivo Neame will be performing with Dave on the night.
Dave’s compositions move from the dark and moody,  to bursts of fire and brimstone, all lead by his dynamic drumming. The writing for the two tenors is superb and the music manages to be complex and metric whilst maintaining a strong sense of direction and emotional involvement.
