FRIDAY 15 NOVEMBER ROLLER TRIO + TRIO RIOT

ROLLER TRIO

James Mainwaring – tenor sax, electronics, Luke Wynter - guitar, Luke Reddin-Williams - drums

Roller Trio, still in their early ‘20s, met whilst studying at Leeds College of Music. Luke W and Luke RW began jamming together before James (LRW’s ex-flat mate) joined in.They started playing and jamming together as a trio and it was immediately apparent that they had a special chemistry. Their music is a fresh, visceral stew of conventional and experimental sounds that features stonking riffs, thrashy noise, evocative songs and electronic soundscapes. Their invigorating mix of rock riffs, angular drums, electronic loops and James' powerful tone and use of circular breathing and multiphonics mark them out as a powerful new band in their own right – one with their own unique voice. They are 2011 winners of the Peter Whittingham Jazz Award administered by the Musicians Benevolent Fund, 2012 Barclaycard Mercury Prize and 2012 Mobo Award nominees.

TRIO RIOT

Mette Rasmussen - alto sax, Sam Andreae - tenor sax, David Meier – drums

Trio Riot formed in Helsinki in 2009, since the they have performed across Europe including dates in Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and England. Stylistically, the band relate their sense of energy to the1980s British punk scene, their approach to sound is inspired by Ornette Coleman and other free jazz pioneers and in their compositional style the group draws inspiration from 20th century contemporary music. With pure performance energy they manage to pull these disparateinfluences together into a compact and hard hitting musical concept.

An incredibly rare and exclusive opportunity for the Fusebox audience to enjoy a one-off UK appearance by this very special duo.

“A laboratory for two of the most inventive string players working today...luminous, hushed, reflective, whimsical, dramatic, gripping, edge-of-your-seat soundscapes imbued with architectural savvy...” – Jim Macnie (Village Voice)

Guitarist/composer Mary Halvorson has been active in New York since 2002, following jazz studies at Wesleyan University and the New School.

Critics have called Ms. Halvorson “NYC’s least-predictable improviser” (Howard Mandel, City Arts), “the most forward-thinking guitarist working right now” (Lars Gotrich, NPR.org) and “one of today’s most formidable bandleaders” (Francis Davis, Village Voice).

Memphis-bred, Grammy-nominated bassist/composer Stephan Crump is a rising light on the New York music scene. As a longtime collaborator with adventurous jazz composers (since 1999 with Vijay Iyer) as well as guitar wizard Jim Campilongo and singer-songwriter Jen Chapin and as leader of his own Rosetta Trio, he has become known for the elegance and purposeful groove of his acoustic and electric bass playing, and for transforming hisinstrument into a speaking entity with magnetic pull on audiences.
