James Hamilton Awarded Jazz Yorkshire Commission
Congratulations to composer James Hamilton who has been awarded the Jazz Yorkshire commission to write a new suite of music entitled 'The Yorkshire Suite'.
Jazz Yorkshire Press Release
Jazz Yorkshire's Commission to write The "Jazz Yorkshire Suite" for big band has received an unprecedented response from six composers of outstanding talent.
The adjudicators had a challenging time in awarding the commission as all submissions had many strengths. Adjudicators' comments included "great melodies", "colourful and playful melodic gestures", "strong Yorkshire context", "strong thematic writing", "great writing within the classic big band style", "musical sophistication, stylistic variety with wide appeal", "concept, thematic approach and seriousness make this a top proposal".
The commission of £1000 to write a suite of four graded, stand alone sections of 4 to 5 minutes each for youth big bands has been awarded to James Hamilton.
Congratulations to James and thanks to all who submitted proposals. The standard of conceptualisation and writing for big bands is of the highest quality in and around Yorkshire, something to celebrate and be very proud of.
The suite will be showcased next year. Time, place and band will be announced as soon as arrangements are completed.
