Smalls Jazz Club is the one NYC jazz club anyone can attend, regardless of where you are in the world. Spike Wilner and his team have worked tirelessly to provide live streaming of gigs and an enormous archive (around 7000) of gigs spanning a number of years. Recently, they ran an indiegogo campaign to raise funds for a new piano and new camera equipment in order to improve the quality of their output and introduce the Musician Revenue Sharing project. Previously, visitors could pay a small fee to gain access to the live streams, and access the archives for free. In a bid to generate income for the musicians, Smalls have decided to alter this system. Now, access to the archive will cost a small fee and with every gig listened to, the musicians on that date will receive payment. The live streams are now free for all. Many NYC musicians remark on the changing landscape of the jazz scene in recent years, but Smalls seems to have managed to maintain the community spirit and creative focus of old. They consistently schedule high quality jazz, both from well-known faces to the upcoming and there are jam sessions throughout the week.
