Tour Preview: Mike Gibbs 80th Birthday Tour, September 2017
Renowned composer Mike Gibbs is to undertake a large ensemble tour in September to celebrate his 80th birthday.
"Gibbs music is full of intriguing inner detail that does not deflect from the ultimate destiny of his pieces." – BBC Music Magazine
From the cuneiform records website...
Brit-jazz composer and arranger Michael Gibbs was born in 1937 in Zimbabwe. Starting in 1959, he studied in Boston at the Berklee College of Music, the Boston Conservatory , Tanglewood and the Lenox School of Music, where he studied with a who's who of contemporary jazz and modern composition: George Russell, Gunther Schuller, Iannis Xenakis, Aaron Copland, Lukas Foss and others. In 1964 he moved to the UK, where he engaged himself in the rapidly emerging contemporary UK jazz scene. Starting in the late 60s and continuing into the mid 70s, he recorded a number of highly acclaimed and influential albums featuring many of the most prominent British-based jazz players who, like Michael, were beginning to flirt with jazz/rock. Since the mid 70s he has worked as a educator as well as a free-lance arranger, doing arrangements and orchestrations for major names such as Joni Mitchell, Pat Metheny, The Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Peter Gabriel among many others, while too infrequently recording his own music.

Draw By Four FRAMEWORK Tour, April to July 2017
Described by Chris Cheek as "dynamic and evocative adventures from soulful and skillful players - a refreshing and groovy band", saxophonist Jon Shenoy's band includes organist Will Bartlett, drummer Chris Draper and one of the North's premiere guitarists, Sam Dunn.
2017 is a busy year for Draw By Four, having secured a 24-date UK tour in the lead up to recording and releasing their first album, FRAMEWORK.
With a line-up steeped in tradition, Draw By Four take the classic 60s organ quartet into brand new territory where the compositions from leader Jon Shenoy (Ivo Neame Large Ensemble) mix contrapuntal bass lines and rhythmic hooks with thoughtful lyricism. Mixing stark ethereal voices with gritty Hammond boogaloo, organist Will Bartlett (Jim Mullen, Salena Jones) draws on a wide palette of sounds that build the foundation for an infectious mix of groove-based original compositions, enchanting ballads and unique arrangements of avant-pop songs.
The FRAMEWORK tour also includes a suite of compositions written in response to paintings by three British painters: Winifred Knights, JMW Turner & Gill Holloway. In the spirit of jazz and innovation Draw By Four will encourage the audience to enjoy an enhanced visual experience – marrying the works of the above artists with the music.
The band are performing up and down the country from now until July and there are a number of chances to catch them in the North -
April 18th - Parr Jazz, Liverpool
April 19th - Matt & Phreds, Manchester
April 20th - Davenham Theatre, Nortwich

Johnny Hunter Quartet Tour, March 25th-31st
“The band admirably reflects the independent creativity of the new Manchester scene.” – John Fordham, The Guardian
Drummer Johnny Hunter's quartet made the most of 2016; as well as their normal schedule of gigs ,they also found the time to release their debut album, While We Still Can, on EFPI Records and they were selected to be part of Jazz North's Northern Line scheme.
Starting on Saturday, the group will play a string of dates including Huddersfield, Scarborough, Liverpool and Manchester so there's ample opportunity to catch these exciting musicians live.
From the FB event page...
Johnny Hunter (Blind Monk Trio, Dub Jazz Soundsystem, Nat Birchall Quintet, Marley Chingus) is a drummer, composer and band-leader who performs across the country in many different ensembles. In 2011, he brought together some of the top players from a thriving Manchester scene that is fast becoming UK Jazz’s new centre of gravity; Ben Watte on tenor saxophone, Graham South on trumpet, and Stewart Wilson on double bass. 2016 saw the release of his critically-acclaimed debut album ‘While We Still Can’ on the EFPI label, which also houses all-conquering big band, Beats & Pieces.
Hunter’s music explores the possibilities and challenges afforded by the absence of a harmony instrument, and takes influence from his long-standing interest in the piano-less groups of Sonny Rollins and Joe Henderson, through to the more modern ensembles of Dave Douglas, John Zorn and Chris Speed.

From the press release...
Jazz supremo Maureen Washington, from British Columbia in Canada, will be singing at Choppard’s Mission in Holmfirth on Saturday 15th April at 7.30pm, accompanied by multi-instrumentalist Jez Platt.
Maureen’s appearance in Holmfirth will be part of a debut tour in the UK to promote her new CD, entitled Harvest Moon. She has also been compared with Jann Arden and Holly Cole but with her very own musical style.
Steve Sykes, a volunteer with Holmfirth Arts Festival, who is organising the event, said:
“We are just so delighted that she has agreed to perform in Holmfirth. It is such an honour and she is also helping us to raise funds for future festivals.”
Tickets for the event cost £12.50 and can be bought from the Imagine Toyshop in Holmfirth or by emailing Steve Sykes on s.l.sykes@btinternet.com
More on the artists...
Maureen Washington: (www.maureenwashington.ca)
With nine albums to her credit, Maureen began her musical career in her home town of Prince George, British Columbia. Their versatile repertoire, ranging from classics to lively originals, brought them sold out crowds. Now based in Victoria, British Columbia, Maureen continues to create new musical avenues and has developed a growing entourage of fans as she performs with duos, sextets, and solo artists, including singing back up on Canadian Folk legend Valdy’s 2011 album, Read Between the Lines.
Jez Platt:
His first solo album, the pop soul (Something About) Blue Skies featured the single Hungry which received airplay across Europe and North America, including the Craig Charles Funk and Soul Show. Jez played guitar, piano and organ on both of Daniel Pearson's albums, co-producing the second. He has played organ with Jim Mullen and Harry Beckett and has toured with Dennis Rollins and the North Stars Steel Orchestra for whom he was also Musical Director

Family Band UK Tour kicks off at Wakefield Jazz, February 24th
Fiery quartet Family Band have announced a tour stretching from Newcastle to London which commences this Friday, 24th February.
2016 saw the band selected for the Jazz North Northern Line initiative, receive BBC radio play and record their first full length album. Now as 2017 gets started, they will perform a number of live performances showcasing material from their upcoming album as well as newly composed works.
This is a superb, freewheeling band composed of four long-time musical collaborators and friends. Jamil's back catalogue as asideman and band leader is impressive but this is first time he has fronted a trio for an album.

Jamil is known throughout the UK Jazz scene for his lyrical and rhythmic approach to original music, and this latest project is no exception. Carefully developed through-composed elements are interwoven with freer improvisations and swinging solos, showing Sheriff to be an artist with a unique identity. His approach brings together a mixture of influences as he endeavors to find common and genuine ground between a wide ranges of styles. He is a passionate ambassador of creative arts grown in the North of England, and invests much time, as an educator (Head of Jazz at Leeds College of Music) and performer, supporting the development of regional scene. Recent collaborations include work with both emerging artists and acclaimed performers such as Ingrid Jensen, Henry Lowther, Dave Lyttle, Tom Harrison, Colman Brothers, Gareth Lockrane, Richard Iles, Neil Yates, Matt Anderson and Josh Kemp. Orpheus Project presents: Ellery Eskelin Trio UK Tour, October 2016
Following on from the highly successful inaugural tour featuring Ingrid Jensen back in May, the Orpheus Project (a partnership between NORVOLJazz and Apollo Jazz Network) have announced the second featured artist in the series, New York tenor saxophonist Ellery Eskelin.
From press release...
The
Orpheus Project is proud to present tenor heavyweight Ellery Eskelin
as their second featured artist. Joined by Chris Sharkey and Matt
Bourne, the trio is comprised of three strong and individual creative
voices that come together to create something greater than the
considerable sum of its parts. The group will tour between October
8th and October 14th, creating performances are
sure to be as unique as they are exciting.
For
the past thirty years Ellery Eskelin has been at the forefront of the
global creative improvised music scene. Based in New York City, he
has traveled widely performing, recording and amassing a very
personal and iconoclastic body of work. And yet Ellery Eskelin has
always remained deeply committed to the traditions of jazz and
American music. Eskelin embodies this seeming contradiction with
ease. He does not see jazz as a style or idiom but as a process.
Further, a process of creative development that has great relevancy
to our time. In this pursuit Eskelin consistently delivers to the
listening public unadulterated, passionate music with no excuses and
no apologies.

Olie Brice Quintet Tour, May/June 2016
Double bassist Olie Brice is an in-demand musician. In the last year, he has released a number of albums - Immune to Clockwork featured his quintet and was his first album as a leader, released by polish label Multikulti Project. Somersaults saw him record in a trio setting with Mark Sanders and Tobias Delius and was released by Two Rivers Records. Finally, Blood Moon is a duo record which features and Tom Challenger. That kind of output is telling of Brice's creative appetite and also of his reputation amongst his peers.
Brice makes the entire body of his bass sing. He has the ability to deliver a fractal line that is as purposeful as any by the great jazz bassists, but to do so within an entirely abstract setting – Brian Morton, Point of Departure
Now, Olie is about to embark on a UK tour with the quintet which features George Crowley, Alex Bonney, Mike Fletcher and Jeff Williams. Luckily for us in the North, there are a number of opportunities to catch this incredible band in May and June -
