Family Band UK Tour kicks off at Wakefield Jazz, February 24th

Fiery quartet Family Band have announced a tour stretching from Newcastle to London which commences this Friday, 24th February.

2016 saw the band selected for the Jazz North Northern Line initiative, receive BBC radio play and record their first full length album. Now as 2017 gets started, they will perform a number of live performances showcasing material from their upcoming album as well as newly composed works.

This is a superb, freewheeling band composed of four long-time musical collaborators and friends.    Rooted in the music of Ornette Coleman and the 1960’s avant-garde, Family Band play powerful music – moments of fierce intensity, a tender spirituality and the blues combine to form an emotionally complex and cathartic whole that rarely fails to move.   They are currently preparing a second CD of music recorded live at the Manchester Jazz Festival at a terrific and well-received gig.

NJN Jazz Advent Calendar - Treppenwitz (Dec 9th)

Behind door number 9 is Treppenwitz, a trio compromised of three Leeds-based musicians - Matt Aplin on piano, Tom Riviere on double bass and Steve Hanley on drums.

Fortuitously, the band released their debut album only this week, so we're pleased to let you hear a snippet of their new release - https://treppenwitzmusic.bandcamp.com/album/short-and-long-ditties

Treppenwitz, n. – treppen (stairs) + witz (wit)
An event or fact that seems to contradict its background or context.
“…(t)he main character in Treppenwitz is a miniature spiral staircase model paralyzed by its future, enchained by its past. It resents everything about its existence including the fact that it was carved by a craftsman rather than having sprung from the womb of a Matryoshka doll. Nor was it conceived as the creation ladder of Ramon Llull’s 14th century eight-step ascension theory…”
Treppenwitz is a project dedicated to improvisation and the exploration of sounds within open structures. It was formed in January 2014 after (though not because) a Philadelphian drummer, Matthew McGraw, left the city of Leeds. The music they make can be seen as an indirect response to this.
Their debut album, Short and Long Ditties is part I of II: the partial documentation of a series of recordings made on 25-26th November 2015 in Leeds Fold.

Two new releases from New Jazz Records

It's been a busy time for Leeds-based record label New Jazz Records. Run by composer and trumpeter James Hamilton, the label recently released Jamil Sheriff's debut trio albums Places Like This. Now, they are gearing up to launch two more albums at a special launch gig at HEART in Headingley on December 6th.

March is the second album double bassist Sam Jackson has released on the label. His group Drawing Hands have released a suite of 12 new pieces and will perform some of this new material at the gig.

Treppenwitz is a trio formed by pianist Matt Aplin, double bassist Tom Riviere and drummer Steve Hanley. Their album, Short and Long Ditties, is the first in a two part release of material recorded at Leeds Fold last year.

The albums will both be launched with live performances at HEART on December 6th. Doors at 7.30 and there's music from 8pm. Tickets are an absolute steal at £5/3 for two great bands.

Gilad Hekselman Trio comes to Leeds, November 9th

One of the most highly regarded jazz guitars in the world will play a one-off performance in Leeds on November 9th as well as a masterclass at Leeds College of Music.

Gilad Hekselman moved from his native Israel to New York in 2004 and has earned his place at the top of his field working with musicians like Mark Turner, Chris Potter, Ari Hoenig, Avishai Cohen and more. To date he has released 5 albums as leader, his latest being Homes in 2015.

... possessing a distinctive lyricism and easily embraceable artfulness that seems to reach beyond his years... Hekselman has a pristine, crystalline sound and a bright playing style that seems as natural and sustaining as air and water... Imagine a brightly lit day, sunlight on water - you are there. If Monet’s waterlily studies were music this could be it... with a quiet assertiveness and expertise that is winning throughout... - Laurel Gross, All About Jazz

Gilad comes to Leeds with his trio featuring double bassist Joe Martin and drummer Kush Abadey. The gig takes place at Wharf Chambers and is hosted by Kim Macari's Apollo Jazz Network in collaboration with bassist and Sela Bar jazz promoter Tom Riviere.

Tickets are priced at £10 and can be bought online through Ticket Tailor. Tickets are selling incredibly fast and are limited so people are advised to book early to avoid disappointment.

LS6 & Sela Bar welcome new students to Leeds with jazz

It's at this time of year that Leeds comes to life as thousands of students descend to start their autumn semester. Many venues will run lots of live music to welcome the new arrivals and show them how vibrant the music scene is and jazz is no different. Two musician-promoters, Benji Powling and Tom Riviere, have made a significant impact on the scene through their programming at LS6 and Sela Bar respectively so we'd like to highlight the two jazz offerings they are hosting this week -

September 18th - LCoM Tutor Band & Jam at Sela

The Cooler returns from it's summer break with a great line-up put together by LCoM jazz pathway leader Jamil Sheriff to welcome the new intake of students to Leeds. As a special one-off event we've teamed up with LCoMSU to organise a jam session after the set, so bring your instruments!

Joel Purnell - Tenor Saxophone
Jamil Sheriff - Piano
Garry Jackson - Double-Bass
Dave Walsh - Drums

September 21st - Emma Johnson's Gravy Boat & Jam at LS6

Recent LCoM graduate Emma Johnson kicks off the autumn season of LS6's weekly gigs with her project, Gravy Boat. Drawing inspiration from great contemporary tenor players like Seamus Blake, Emma's writing style is rooted in strong melodies.

Emma Johnson - Tenor Saxophone
Calvin Travers - Guitar
Sam Quintana - Double Bass
Ali Wells - Drums

NJ Advent Calendar - Musician/Promoters (December 6th)

A significant and vital part of the jazz scene in the North is the contribution made by voluntary promoters, as we highlighted with NORVOL Jazz on December 1st. An interesting and vibrant sub-category of these promoters are those who promote live jazz as part of their career as a performing musician. Many young professional musicians are taking up the task of running jazz nights at venues across the North. These musician/promoters provide performance opportunities for both touring and local bands, many of whom are emerging artists themselves.

LS6, Leeds - Ben Powling

Tenor saxophonist and LCoM graduate Ben Powling has run a very popular jazz gig & jam session at LS6 in Leeds in recent years. He has also recently expanded this programming to include world music events at the same venue. This weekly gig features both local and touring bands. In addition to this, Ben also promotes The Blackout, a series of improvised music nights that feature multiple bands and works for Leaf Label.

The Noise Upstairs, Manchester - Anton Hunter

Guitarist Anton Hunter is an established part of the jazz scene through his work with Beats & Pieces, The Beck Hunters and was recently commissioned by MJF to write a new large-ensemble piece called Article XI. In between this and writing his PhD, Anton has for the last 8 years run a free improvisation night in Manchester called The Noise Upstairs. This event brings together improvisers on all sorts of instrumentation and puts together spontaneous performances and collaboration, as well as featuring sets from established groups.

Efpi/Freedom Principle, Manchester - Sam Andreae, Ben Cottrell, Anton Hunter

These three Manchester musicians have run Efpi Records for a number of years and their catalogue includes the works of Beats & Pieces, Let Spin, Trio Riot and HAQ amongst others. The team also ran a live night called The Freedom Principle and were invited to produce a series of concerts as part of the Manchester Jazz Festival in recognition of their contributions to the scene.

The Cooler at Sela Bar, Leeds - Tom Riviere

Sela Bar in Leeds has long be known as a jazz venue in Leeds and for a number of years has had musicians curating the live gigs. Taking over from Matt Anderson and Sam Gardner early this year was double bassist Tom Riviere. Tom promotes monthly gigs on Sunday evenings at Sela with artists like Stuart McCallum, Sam Leak, Andrew Woodhead and more appearing on the programme.

Leeds Fold - James Hamilton

Big band leader, award-winning composer and trumpeter James Hamilton has recently assembled a team of musicians in Leeds to take over a recording and rehearsal studio called Leeds Fold. This space is a home for his record label New Jazz Records and is used for recording sessions and rehearsals by improvising musicians. They also host live events including jam sessions and will soon be entering into the world of gig streaming.

The Lescar, Sheffield - Jez Matthews

The Lescar programmes live jazz weekly and is run by pianist Jez Matthews. Jez took over the venue from guitarist Chris Walker a few years ago and has a seemingly limitless source of energy in promoting a varied programme from mainstream swing to left-field improvised music. Jez is also involved with Sheffield Jazz.

Lit & Phil, Newcastle - Paul Edis

Paul Edis is widely considered to be a leading figure on the North East scene and has released three albums as a leader as well as featuring on many more as the pianist in ACV and other groups. Paul programmes jazz at the Lit & Phil, utilising the beautiful acoustics to showcase local and touring jazz musicians.

Lancaster Jazz Festival - Matt Robinson

The Lancaster Jazz Festival has gone from strength to strength under the directorship of clarinettist and composer Matt Robinson. Another LCoM graduate, Matt and his team programme an annual festival with a focus on emerging talent and events across Lancaster as well as a special commission project each year.

Sproggits, Leeds - Harry Orme

Originally set up by pianist Declan Forde, now resident in Berlin, Sproggits is a night which usually features a double bill of one local and one out-of-town band. It takes place in Wharf Chambers and has seen performances by Glasshopper, Alicia Gardener-Trejo's Bobtail and one-off collaborations between many improvising musicians in the North.

Jazz in York, John Marley

Double bassist John Marley has been involved in promoting and performing live jazz in York for many years and is an important factor in the growing number of gig opportunities and growing audiences for jazz in York. The Phoenix in York sees regular gigs and jam sessions led by many musicians from the Leeds and York scenes.

Upcoming gigs & a new promoter at Sela Bar, Leeds

It's all change for the jazz at Sela Bar in Leeds; saxophonist Matt Anderson has moved to London and taking the helm now is bassist Tom Riviere.

Matt has run The Cooler for a number of years and it's been the host of some great international guests (Jerry Bergonzi and Eric Harland, for example) as well as a regular line-up of local and national groups.

Tom's reign begins on September 20th with an LCoM Tutors Special featuring Joel Purnell, Jamil Sheriff, Dave Walsh and Garry Jackson.

Keep an eye on future listings on the Cooler at Sela Bar facebook page.

Gig Preview: Tom Riviere Quartet at HEART, January 24th

Jazz at Heart Presents: Tom Riviere Quartet
Saturday 24th January, 7.30pm
£8/6

Bassist and composer Tom has been a valuable part of the Leeds Jazz scene since moving from Brighton to study at LCoM in 2008. Leaving with a 1st Class Honours degree, Tom also won prizes for his compositions and had them performed by the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and Leeds College of Music Big Band.

Although he can be seen regularly with a number of ensembles in the North, this performance is one of the few occasions to catch Tom as a band leader. His quartet, featuring Young Jazz Musician of the Year Matt Anderson on saxophone, pianist Martin Longhawn and drummer Steve Hanley, the group will perform Tom's original compositions as well as some much-loved standards.

Read more about Tom at his website and follow him on twitter.
