What kind of jazz? Their approach is to "bring the very best of British and international Jazz to sheffield, and to support up-and-coming musicians as well as established stars. From hard-swinging post-bop to Art Pepper influenced melodic jazz to contemporary jazz, new compositions, latin jazz and a new wave of young bands."
Who runs the night? Sheffield Jazz includes Jude Sacker, Paul Thomas and Jez Matthews
Millennium Hall is a
friendly venue which has comfortable seating for up to 150 people, small tables
and a bar. We have a good Yamaha upright piano and PA.
The Crucible Studio is an
intimate theatre ‘in the round’ with a Steinway Grand and holds up to 400
people.
The Jazz at The Lescar
Hotel is in a pleasant room seating up to 80 people with lighting, PA, and
access to a good bar.
Sheffield
Jazz is a charity which provides opportunities for
people from all backgrounds in Sheffield and the surrounding region to
hear some of the best and the newest jazz available. Sheffield
Jazz (and its predecessor, Hurlfield Jazz) has been operating for over 30 years.
Until 2008, when it became a company limited by guarantee, it was a purely
informal voluntary organisation. We still rely on a small army of volunteers but
we now have the additional stability and security which company status provides
and during 2009 Sheffield Jazz also achieved charitable status
(Registered Charity Number
1130936). Due to the retirement of The Lescar’s founder and
lead person, Chris Walker, Sheffield Jazz was invited by
him to take over in January 2013 the running of the Lescar club alongside our
own gigs at the Millennium Hall and the Crucible Studio. This represents a major
opportunity to present the Sheffield public with a better
co-ordinated and more coherent jazz programme.
