Northern Line Group 'Jamil Sheriff Trio' To Play Matt and Phreds.

Jazz North 'Northern Line' ensemble The Jamil Sheriff Trio, featuring Jamil Sherrif (piano/composition), Pete Turner (double bass) and Dave Walsh (drums), will be performing at Manchester's 'Matt and Phreds' on the 11th December.
Expect dramatic, engaging compositions and fantastic ensemble and solo playing from this accomplished trio.

'Excellent northern pianist who brings together a range of classic, contemporary and urban approaches' - The Times.

This trio, lead by Leeds-based pianist and composer Jamil Sherrif, was formed in 2012 after the musicians had worked together on projects spanning several years and in 2013 the group was selected by Jazz North to be part of the programme ‘The Northern Line’.

Jamil's playing is a satisfying blend of innovation and tradition, showing parti
cular influence from such jazz piano heavyweights as McCoy Tyner, Kenny Kirkland and Don Grolnick. Delicate and measured when necessary, but also with more than enough muscle to build some real intensity, it's unsurprising that Jamil has performed and recorded with artists such as Dave Liebman, Dave Newton, The Tommy Evan's Orchestra, James Hamilton and Krzysztof Urbanski as well as leading his own big band, octet and trio.

His compositions, brimming with unexpected twists and turns, balance grooves with floating melodies, moments of fire with melancholic introspection and jagged rhythms with charming harmonies. The wide spectrum of textures and attitudes available show a skilled composer, and in Pete Turner and Dave Walsh, Jamil has found two musicians more than capable of making the most of his talents.
