JBQ consists of British Jazz Awards rising star, Jamie on Trumpet. Tom Kincaid on Piano, Ken Marley on Double Bass, and Jack Cotterill on Drums. This fresh and exciting quartet have a vast  range of experience in different styles of music and have come together to play their own mix of  New Orleans street beat, swing & reggae.

The band are heavily influenced by the likes of Harry Connick Jr, Leroy Jones, Clark Terry,Oscar Peterson & Christian McBride, to name only a few. From the original New Orleans Street Beat tunes such as “The Happy Feet Blues” through to our own compositions you can hear the roots of the music we listen to.

The band members have played with such notables as Bruce Adams, Shakin Stevens, Scott Hamilton, Alan Barnes, Digby Fairweather… Playing all over the world from Europe, to Scandinavia, and as far as the US!

The band have a residency, and perform once a month at Matt & Phreds Jazz Club, Manchester.

Gerard Presencer - Modern Approach to Trumpet workshops

 Trumpet players should set aside some time in their diary in May, as renowned trumpeter and educator Gerard Presencer visits conservatoires across the UK to demonstrate his new book, Modern Approach to Trumpet.

Gerard, who currently lives in Copenhagen, will return to the UK with support from Warwick Music Publishers and Geneva Trumpets to give workshops in Manchester, London and Birmingham as well as working with NYJO.

A Modern Approach to Playing the Trumpet" by Gerard Presencer is just what is sorely needed in the Trumpet/Jazz Pedagogy world. This is a book which combines modern studies for traditional trumpet technique, with the added bonus of explaining the studies via the route of a jazz conception with regards to articulation, forward motion and swing. This makes this book unique in every way, and should be required study for every trumpet player who wants to compete in the complex world of today's music. Bravo Gerard! - Randy Brecker

Edition Records recently released Gerard's latest album, Groove Travels, with the Danish Radio Big Band and workshop participants will be able to get their hands on a copy of that, too.

RIP Lew Soloff

Renowned jazz musician and session trumpet player Lew Soloff passed away on Sunday 8th March aged 71.

Soloff worked tirelessly as a trumpet player in the USA, building impressive CVs both as a pop sideman and jazz musician. His work with Blood, Sweat and Tears brought him international acclaim, as did his playing Paul Simon's hit, You Can Call Me Al.

As a jazz musician, he worked for many years with luminaries like Gil Evans and Carla Bley, and was a member of the Manhattan Jazz Quintet. He taught at Manhattan School of Music for over 20 years.

His passing comes shortly after the sad deaths of Kenny Wheeler and Clark Terry. The world of jazz trumpet has lost three greats.

Jay Phelps Comes to Doncaster

Coco Ice Wine Bar in Bawtry, Doncaster is hosting their last Sunday Jazz Afternoon of the year on 25th August and will feature trumpeter Jay Phelps.

Phelps will perform with a band of London-based musicians including vibes player Roger Beaujolais, drummer Moses Boyd and bassist Mark Lewandowski.

The gig (held in the hometown of Jay's mother) will be an intimate event, with only 100 tickets available, is sure to be well-attended so Coco Ice Wine Bar advise that you book early!
