The Bad Plus come to Leeds, November 12th
Get out your diaries and block out November 12th because the trailblazing Bad Plus are to perform at the Howard Assembly Room in Leeds in a very special Northern appearance.
Based in New York, the Bad Plus are an iconaclastic trio comprised of Ethan Iverson, Dave King and Reid Anderson. Established in 2000, the band have spent the last 16 years performing across the world and have released 11 studio albums - most recently teaming up with saxophonist Joshua Redman (The Bad Plus Joshua Redman, 2015)
“Audacious, rule-breaking jazz trio crunches and at times pulverizes swing to let improvisational freedom shine...Dynamics play a huge roll in the act's music, as does humor, an element sorely lacking in most of contemporary jazz. But beauty is also key... jazz purists tremble while the vanguard flocks.” - Billboard
“It’s about as badass as highbrow gets.”
- Rolling Stone
Tickets cost £20.00 and are sure to sell fast, so early booking is advised. For this performance, award winning duo Binker and Moses will open the show.
For more information, visit the Howard Assembly Room website.

Norma Winstone at Dean Clough, September 15th
Vocalist and national jazz treasure Norma Winstone is to perform at the Dean Clough in Halifax on September 15th in a special 75th Birthday concert.
Joined by the Printmakers (Nikki Iles, Mike Walker, Mark Lockheart, Steve Watts and James Maddren), she will perform a range of material including music from the Printmaker's debut album, Westerly.
Tickets for the event cost £15/12 and can be booked through the Dean Clough website.
From Dean Clough's website...
Inevitably Norma cut her teeth on ‘standards’ but it was the way that she developed the improvisational use of her voice that marked her out as a performer. Early confederates included the likes of Mike Westbrook, Michael Garrick, John Surman, Kenny Wheeler and John Taylor. She was voted ‘top singer’ in a Melody Maker Jazz Poll as early as 1971 (her solo album of the period, ‘Edge of Time’, has been twice re-released as a CD).
In
the late Seventies she joined forces with Kenny Wheeler and John Taylor
in the trio, Azimuth, whose ECM releases became a byword for jazz
excellence over the next 17 years. Far from being subsumed into a group
ethos, though, Norma has always effortlessly retained her individual
profile — her 1986 album ’Somewhere Called Home’, for instance, is
generally hailed as a classic.
As
someone renowned for her wordless singing technique, there is a certain
irony in the fact that Norma has in recent years become credited as a
fine lyricist. ‘Ladies in Mercedes’ (written for a Steve Swallow
composition) is only the most prominent among a host of songs that have
attracted cover versions alongside her own lauded performances.
By the millennium Norma was issuing regularly acclaimed CDs with peers such as Fred Hersch or Stan Tracey & Bobby Wellins — but
in 2002 issued her first CD with pianist Glauco Venier and Sax/clarinet
player Klaus Gesing. The latter ‘trio’ has become one of her most
frequent incarnations, not least because of their compelling ECM
release, ‘Distances’, in 2007.
And of course, Norma’s other frequent ‘group appearance’ has been with The Printmakers who
are, unquestionably, the equal of any jazz band you could put together
from a UK stable. While mention should be made of Norma’s MBE (2007) and
her 2015 success as Jazz Vocalist of the Year in the Parliamentary Jazz
Awards — it’s the music that really matters.
This Spring the Printmakers released what is — almost bizarrely — their
‘debut’ album ‘Westerly’. No doubt we’ll get a taste of it in tonight’s
performance; because birthday celebration or no, it’s hard to imagine
Norma being anything other than contemporary…

Orpheus Project presents: Ellery Eskelin Trio UK Tour, October 2016
Following on from the highly successful inaugural tour featuring Ingrid Jensen back in May, the Orpheus Project (a partnership between NORVOLJazz and Apollo Jazz Network) have announced the second featured artist in the series, New York tenor saxophonist Ellery Eskelin.
From press release...
The
Orpheus Project is proud to present tenor heavyweight Ellery Eskelin
as their second featured artist. Joined by Chris Sharkey and Matt
Bourne, the trio is comprised of three strong and individual creative
voices that come together to create something greater than the
considerable sum of its parts. The group will tour between October
8th and October 14th, creating performances are
sure to be as unique as they are exciting.
For
the past thirty years Ellery Eskelin has been at the forefront of the
global creative improvised music scene. Based in New York City, he
has traveled widely performing, recording and amassing a very
personal and iconoclastic body of work. And yet Ellery Eskelin has
always remained deeply committed to the traditions of jazz and
American music. Eskelin embodies this seeming contradiction with
ease. He does not see jazz as a style or idiom but as a process.
Further, a process of creative development that has great relevancy
to our time. In this pursuit Eskelin consistently delivers to the
listening public unadulterated, passionate music with no excuses and
no apologies.
